St. Ives Frame
A St Ives Frame is an inset inside a frame
The image is then raised up to the level of the inset by means of blocks and floats, which creates a shadow.

Double Frame
A Double Frame is just that, a frame inside a frame. The inside frame can be plain or decorative of another colour

Plain Frame
A Plain Frame is usually bought rather than hand made and is just a raised border to the image. I always paint them. I rarely use glass.

No Frame
No Frame is only used when canvas is wrapped around the canvas stretcher (bespoke), to continue the image around the edge.

Float Frame
A Float Frame, sometimes called a Tray Frame is like a St Ives Frame but without the inner edge. Again the image is raised up on battens to create a shadow.
The image in a Float frame may be board, canvas or battened board. The gap between the canvas edge and the frame is a personal choice. Commercially available float frames allow for a minute gap for obvious financial reasons.

Custom “Glass” Frame
A custom “glass” frame with an internal cut mount.
The glass is perspex for safety reasons. The internal paper mount is cut to the artists size choice and the frames are bespoke to the work although not made by me.
This is the type of frame available in shops although these specific ones were cut/made to my chosen size.
